Surprisingly, I’m a huge fan of green drinks. As much as I love making/eating sweet treats and cakes, I do try to focus on my health as much as possible – which means having a diet filled with fresh fruit and vegetables. One of the ways I like to make sure of this, is by making juices and smoothies.

Some days, I can go a bit crazy and make a drink packed with all sorts of ingredients that I’ve gathered from my fridge. The result can be a real hit or miss – but at least I always know I’ve made something healthy! Most days, however, I just fancy something that’s simple, tasty, and will keep me going through the rest of my day. Usually it’s before or after a workout when I most feel like I need this energy boost.

Whenever I feel like my energy needs uplifting, I try to find natural ingredients that will help give me a boost. One of my favourite ways to do this, is to add a high quality superfood powder into whatever I’m making. I tend to mix and match between different powders, but the one I love the most has to be Spirulina. Whether I’m making chocolates, my Superfood Energy Balls, soup or a smoothie like this, I will always add a spoonful of Spirulina to really help boost my energy levels.

Not only do I adore its deep green colour, but the nutrients it contains are amazing. It’s 60-70% protein, and is rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin B, potassium and much more. It’s definitely a true superfood in my eyes. So, when Nutrex Hawaii got in touch with me, asking if I wanted to try their natural Spirulina products, I couldn’t be more excited.

As soon as my package arrived from them, I couldn’t wait to try all three of their amazing Spirulina products; Spirulina Powder, Spirulina Tablets and Superfood Powder. I decided to begin by using their Spirulina Powder, and share it with you in a post for one of my favourite energy boosting smoothies – my green energy booster. The recipe is simple, tasty and filled with all of my favourite, healthy energy packed ingredients – such as hemp seeds, almond butter and medjool date.

This is my favourite drink to make post work out, when I’m in a serious need of a pick me up! It’s light, smooth and sweet. I hope you like it!

serves 1-2


1 banana

1 medjool date, pitted

1 1/2 cups (375ml) rice milk

1 tbsp almond butter

1 tbsp shelled hemp seeds

1 tsp spirulina powder


  1. Add the banana, date, rice milk, almond butter, hemp seeds and spirulina into your blender – I used my Froothie Optimum 2.1 Blender. Blend until smooth. Then, pour into a glass and serve.

  3. I bought a bottle of spirulina and maca last year from amazon. Maca is about finished while the green stuff is still full. Well, it’s not that I don’t like green, but always forget to use it. This looks great!

  12. There is nothing quite as perfect after a workout as a big ole’ green smoothie! I love to start off with some veggies too, so then whatever baked little chocolatey decadences come later I’ve already balanced out 😉 I love your combo, the hemp seeds and spirulina are definitely things I need to try throwing in the blender. I even have that exact same spirulina in my cabinet actually, so I really have no good excuse haha!
